TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

[ They were good at surviving, it's why there was so many of them still alive even when everything else had been erased. It seemed they were also the cause of many nexus events, which is why they got pulled from the timeline for special pruning. ]

More now than there had been. Before I killed the man who was in charge, only one timeline was allowed to exist; the Sacred Timeline. One single timeline of events, while the others were destroyed. Any time someone caused that timeline to branch off, say one of us picked up the Tessaract and managed to avoid imprisonment after the Battle of New York, when the Sacred Timeline dictated they shouldn't have, that creates a new branch while that person becomes a variant.

[ A small shrug. ]

Killing the man in charge lets us write our own stories, and revealing the truth that everyone working at the TVA were variants with their memories manipulated allowed other timelines to live. After saving all of time, there could be millions or more of us.

[There is clearly more to this story than she's telling, but Loki doesn't really have the time or inclination to pick it all apart now. He's still somewhat adapting internally to the reality of another 'him' being right there. So to speak.]

O.B. implied it was more complicated than that, but never gave details. In any case, doesn't matter. We're stuck here for now. Yes, I know, that chafes badly.

[Likely especially for her, if she had been told she wasn't 'allowed' to exist.]

Do you know how to use the device in your satchel? It resembles a mobile telephone and is a used to communicate. It's not secure, but it works.
writingourownstories: (ask me if i care)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A whole lot more, but he has the gist of it now. Perhaps later on, they can get a drink and she can give more details. Once he's wrapped his head around her existence and all she already told him. ]

It is, but we've sorted it out as far as my memories of the situation go. All of the timelines are safe. [ Which Loki will be able to tell O.B. if he ever comes back and she's not here. ] Can I earn my belongings back the same way I can earn my magic?

[ Perhaps the TemPad of He Who Remains will work to get her out of this place. At the very least, Sylvie will have some peace of mind to know it's not in someone else's hands. ]

I know how to work a cellphone. [ She pulls it out of her coat pocket, the green pendant wrapped around it specifically where the eye is - essentially blindfolding it so it can't see. ] Sort of gathered that it wasn't secure with the eye looking at me.

It would depend on the belonging, probably. Sometimes we get unexpected things. I wished for an Asgardian Sword, and it gave me one--but it's not one I recognize or have heard of. The wishes may or may not be controlled by our host too, for all I know.

[Loki shrugged.]

The device itself may or may not be secure, but it's more the network it's on. It's likely controlled by Vaeros, or one of his minions if not. It also sometimes knows things about us that we'd rather others not find out.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The way her nose wrinkles indicates she's displeased with the answer. ] I likely won't be getting it back, then. Doubt the host would want to give me a device that allows me to go anywhere and anywhen. [ She is curious about the sword he got, though. ] Show me?

[ Perhaps she'll be able to recognize it for him, or maybe it'll be a mystery to the both of them.

An eyebrow raises. ]
It knows things and then shares it?

[Loki held out a hand, and summoned a golden sword. Then, making sure there was room, he set it on fire with a thought.]

I'll explain about that in a moment. Best I should warn you anyways.
writingourownstories: (such disbelief)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Perhaps she should be surprised that it sets on fire without warning, but the widening of her eyes happens before that, at the very first appearance of the golden weapon. ]

I've seen that sword before. Or at least one just like it. It belonged to a kid Loki at the end of time, and he gave it to the variant Loki I knew. He'd lost it shortly afterwards.
whose_son_am_i: (Thor--Facepalm)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Loki sighs, and de-ignites it before having it vanish.]

So it's essentially a sword that is 'mine'. Or 'ours', hmm?

[There's an eye-roll, then he turns in a direction--presumably where the crystal is in the distance. Clenching his fists and yelling now.]

THINK YOU'RE FUNNY, HUH? VERY CLEVER YES, GIVING ME THAT SWORD. TRULY YOU'RE A GENIUS!

[There are equal parts sarcasm and annoyance in the shout.]
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A single shoulder shrugs upwards at his questions, her face the silent expression of "that's the gist of it".

Then he turns towards the crystal and shouts at it. Shouting often helped her vent, so it's not like she's going to stop him from doing it. ]

If you ever get a green sword with runes on it, that one's mine and I'd like it back.

[ Sylvie is quiet for a moment. ]

Want to go find another monster and fight it, or is there a bar around this place where we can get a drink?
whose_son_am_i: (Do you hear how you sound?)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a few places for drinks, depending on what you want.

[He can't really say he feels 'better' after shouting, but he doesn't feel worse.]

I can warn you about one of the things with your device while we do that. It's a program that happens just about every other month or so.
writingourownstories: (the face of sarcasm)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hearing that her phone will be making something happen every other month makes her want to shout. ]

If that's the case, then something hard to drink. Think I'm gonna need it after hearing more about this.
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
There's probably very little about your situation here that won't make you need it.

[So they can try Laserhawk's bar or the local tavern. If neither looks like it'll work, Loki'll just raid his personal stash and share for now.]

This way, I'll talk as we walk. For whatever reason, every other month a program pops up on our display screens asking us for a profile and some information, uses a picture of us, and then asks us two different questions. There are buttons underneath signalling you wish to "Friend", "Flirt", "Fight", or "Pass". It's called Sleepr, and I'm given to understand it's mean to be a way of finding dates.

Sounds like I'll have to stock up.

[ When Loki goes to lead the way, Sylvie takes up a place beside him. Arms hang loose at her side, but she's ready for another monster to appear or something even worse to happen.

What he tells her is... well, dating apps aren't uncommon. This is a new spin on it. ]

What happens if you don't fill it out?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The Oracle will decide to fill it out for you. And it can be nasty, or just passive aggressive. I was warned, so I warn others, but I still missed it the second time I experienced it. It wrote about my past; trying to kill Thor, invading New York, killing Laufey. Things I'd rather have not had shared to whomever it pleases. Sometimes it'll include things you yourself didn't know, based on how it's happened to others.

[Loki is not nearly as on guard as Sylvie is, but that doesn't mean he's not wary too.]

Some people just ignore it all together. It can be useful for making contacts, and fun as well. Doesn't seem to matter what you write as a profile or answers, just that you do it.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She does not like that at all. While Sylvie has things about herself that she'd like to know (such as her nexus event), having them shared with the rest of the world is not acceptable. Having the choice taken away from her cannot happen.

Perhaps that comes across in the way her gaze becomes sharper or how her hand clenches around the cellphone like she wants to crush it. ]

So you can lie on it?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh absolutely. Although it translates any text you try to write into something that other's can read.

[Loki is not surprised by this tangent of thought at all.]

Mr. Gold regularly uses his for nonsense and the program doesn't care. I know other people lie on it a lot too.
writingourownstories: (loki squared)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He could have lied to her, told her it only accepts the truth in an attempt to get more information on her. Sylvie appreciates that he didn't. ]

Do you lie on it?

[ This question isn't to gain more knowledge about the world, but about him. Wondering if he keeps his personal information closer to home, or answers the questions freely. ]

What sort of questions does it ask?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Very interesting ones, in the sense that I wonder why. One was about whether you put on your trousers or socks first. Another was about what you'd like to be known for in death. I've not yet lied outright, but that's because I prefer to be more clever about it. There are also those who do know of us. Or at least a version of us, as we seem to be the catch-all for weird stuff in their myths. So hiding some things just doesn't seem worth it.

writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie is confused why one question is so ridiculous and the other so serious, what's the purpose behind it? ]

Have you got a list of the questions you've seen so far?

[ Like him, she wants to compile as much information as possible. Perhaps there's no rhyme or reason to the questions picked, or perhaps there is. ]

I've no doubt. Earth's myths are certainly something to hear about. To say nothing about tales beyond it.
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm certain I could get you one, but I haven't kept track of them. I've only been through 3 of these Sleepr events so far.

[He probably should be keeping track--there's just been so much else to keep track of.]

Oh I've heard of some beyond too. But, for example, when I arrived here and introduced myself, I met a young girl who is an anthropomorphic duck named Webby. She mentioned me in the context of some of her myths for confirmation. Some of what she mentioned either happened differently or not at all to me, though I am Loki.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Can I use the phone to dig into past Sleepr events?

[ Look at this, there's two of him now - so that's work shared.

At the news of an anthropomorphic duck, Sylvie's head tilts curiously. ]

Are we also an anthropomorphic duck in her world? Or perhaps some other animal?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If you really want to. And I believe we were. She and I and one other were trapped in one of the Labyrinth rooms that acted as a photograph studio. We weren't allowed to leave until we'd taken pictures. I turned into an anthropomorphic duck to look more like her, and she said I looked "right".

[OOC: I've no idea on the phones and past. Sorry]
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'll look for myself. [ On the matter of the Sleepr questions.

Somehow, hearing that seems to fit with the weirdness of the multiverse. ]

And I thought the alligator was odd. Fitting, but odd.
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Webby is an odd duck, it's true. She herself recognizes she's not normal. But not because she's a duck, but for other reasons. You'll know her if you meet and talk to her.

Any other questions or things I can try and clarify?
writingourownstories: (arms of disapproval)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Won't I know her by the fact that she's an anthropomorphic duck? [ All of the people she's met so far have had a human appearance, and Webby is the first she's even heard of anyone different. ]

O.B., how long was he here?

[ Sylvie's not sure she'd call him a friend, but as far as individuals from the TVA, he wasn't so bad. ]
