TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

[ She takes note of the surroundings, both to ensure nothing attacks them and to remember the way for a drink later. It looks like the sort of place one would go if looking to start a bar fight.

Nothing attacks Loki when he steps inside, and she follows him in, taking an opportunity to look around. ]

No, I'm fine.

[ Her break may have been interrupted by the appearance of the other Loki back in the 80s timeline, but there was a perk to having access to a tempad. Choosing when to leave. ]

[Loki shrugs, and heads off to the bar part of the tavern. Ordering two ales for them, and then for them to keep coming until he says stop. It's not like he can't afford it right now. While waiting for the first two tankards he looks around without seeming to actively do so.

No signs of the strangeness so far. Hopefully it'll stay that way. It also means that once the first two tankards are brought up, he can find Sylvie easily enough. Setting one of the two in front of her, then taking his own seat. Aware of the exits and entrances, of paths that can be walked around him, just in case. She likely has a similar awareness.]

[ She's chosen a table that can see all of the entrances and exits, sitting in a chair that have that line of sight. While Loki is waiting for the drinks, she drags another chair at the table to a position where he can also watch for danger. Doors aren't going to slow down one of those monsters for long. ]

Thanks. [ A single word of gratitude for the drink, which she lifts to her lips.

It's tempting to chug the whole tankard, but Sylvie settles for a healthy gulp. Best not to get drunk in the current situation. ]

So, got any more questions you want to ask now?
whose_son_am_i: (Discussion)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Plenty, but I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out which ones to ask. I imagine you've got plenty for me though, and you're hardly the first new arrival I've encountered.

[Loki took a healthy gulp of his own. The ale wasn't much to look at, but it tasted decently enough and was safe enough.]
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie's hardly a beginner when it comes to arriving in a new world, having to figure things out on the go. Apocalypses were never safe, not everyone was kind, information wasn't handed to her. There are hundreds of questions she could think to ask him about what makes this world tick. ]

If you were standing in front of Vaeros right now, what would you do?

[ It's maybe not the sort of question he was expecting. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Do you hear how you sound?)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
[It is not, and he takes his time formulating an answer.]

If we're assuming I don't have any more information than I have right now? Knock him unconscious and find a way to keep him so until I determine it's safe to kill him. I'm not above using mind control or drugs or both, as well.
writingourownstories: (ask me if i care)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ A finger idly taps against her tankard while waiting for him to consider the plan he'd take in that situation. Does Sylvie regret killing He Who Remains? Maybe a bit. While she doesn't regret the fact that she freed the timelines and helped bring change to the TVA, she regrets what it cost to keep it going.

She knows she can't compare her situation to his, no matter how many similarities there may be. ]

I'll try not to kill him if I happen to meet him first. [ Sylvie takes another drink. ] Might even help you enchant him if I've got my magic back by then.

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Enchant?

[There's a small smirk.]

That word can have many meanings. How are you using it?
writingourownstories: (we're doing my plan)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ The moment she spoke the word, Sylvie knew he'd ask. ]

By making physical contact, I can grab hold of their mind. Once I've done that I can make them act on my behalf or obey my whims. If they are touching someone, I can move power through them to enchant multiple people at once. I can trap them in an illusion within their own mind created from their memories to gather information from them, or simply force them to relive past events.

Someone with a strong mind is able to resist, but I've found that combining my ability with another Loki's is enough to even overcome a creature that consumes time and space itself.
whose_son_am_i: (poker face in shadow)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
[That all made sense, and sounded similar to some of what he'd done before. Albeit through formal spells and mental magic rather than pure will, which is what it sounded like she used.]

I know some of how to do that. Before coming here, I was able to make someone relive their memories by touching them. I've also altered minds and memories before. I've never tried through the people themselves though.

[A surreptitious look around them, and a discreet drink.]

Given some recent events, and just being here in general, it's not something I've let be known openly. Once you regain your magic, I suggest you keep that discreet as well.

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie suspects he'll be as surprised as the other Loki to learn that she taught herself magic, even as crude as it is compared to how he learned. ]

I taught myself. It was necessary to survive the TVA hunting me down after I escaped.

[ The way he casts his gaze around the tavern, as though someone will overhear them talk about it in this crappy bar while the city is being rampaged by video game monsters is telling. However, there's a slight problem if he wants her to keep it discrete.

She debates if she reveals that weakness to him, if she trusts him with it. While she debates, Sylvie chugs the rest of her ale in one go. ]

Enchanting is the only magic I know well. I was a child when I was taken from Asgard, and I don't have many clear memories of my mother or of home.
whose_son_am_i: (Discussion)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh. Well. That will complicate things.

Fortunately there are more tankards coming, though not quite instantly. Loki is impressed she taught herself, though not that surprised. He'd taught himself tricks Frigga hadn't, after all. Still, he takes another drink while thinking it all over a bit. The information she gave him.]

First, I'm sorry because that shouldn't have happened to you. It was wrong. Second, I can likely teach you other magic. There are others here besides me who could teach you as well. Third, there is your potion if you choose to drink it.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yes, it will if he wants to keep that ability quiet for as long as possible. Enchantment is her offense and defense, her way of gathering information, or going unnoticed. While she can use magic to blast an opponent or two, she has no experience with the sort of magic he uses.

No fireworks over water or daggers, or constructing the whole of Asgard as a distraction. She knows that she's capable of doing so, but after the citadel Sylvie tried to have a normal human life. Or maybe she simply felt empty or lost after achieving her goal. ]

It's not your fault, and I took care of the people responsible for it. [ Then there's the offer. He would be the most suitable for teaching her, as her powers mimic his. Her nose wrinkles in displeasure when he mentions the potion. ] While I'm willing to use technology or other items, drinking the potion sounds like a trap. I don't trust it.

[ As for whether she learns how to wield her magic from him or someone else, Sylvie hasn't decided yet. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Do you hear how you sound?)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure how much help technology will be, as it's definitely not the first priority here. I can recommend--and I mean I strongly recommend--you go to the Flame and Claw forge instead of the one in town. That one gouges you, while the Flame and Claw is owned and run by someone in it for the love of the craft. Red Son also offers a new arrival special. A basic weapon and some basic cookware, for free. He's where I bought my daggers. The two you've seen, and the throwing ones you've not.
writingourownstories: (we're doing my plan)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Still, using an item is different from drinking a potion. [ Even if having a healing ability would be very useful, she's still reluctant. Nearly everything she knows, she taught herself. Nothing was neatly bottled up and granted to her like this. ]

Flame and Claw, I'll pay it a visit before I search for a place to stay. [ Sylvie hands her tankard to the waitress who brings them refills. ] Your daughter told me most housing was free.

[Ah, so she'd met Alice. That wasn't very suprising, knowing the girl.]

She's quite correct. Basic hill houses, mushroom, and tree houses are free. I believe a basic cottage is free too, though I'm not certain.

[He'd been lucky enough to get invited to live somewhere that didn't require him to fix things up. That invite had been the start of a lot of good things for him in Somnius.]

You'll have to pay shards for electricity and running water. And any major renovations you want. When I moved in, I tested the system by ordering a proper hearth and fireplace, since winter was soon.
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Alice seems like a very curious girl who ends up meeting and making a lot of friends. ]

Which would you say is the most secure?

[ Sylvie isn't worried about renovations much, so long as the place is safe enough for her to hunker down in. She's slept wherever she could, truthfully. ]

So long as it's a proper shelter and I don't have to sleep on the floor, any place is good.
whose_son_am_i: (Discussion)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on how you define secure, as things can go crazy here depending on various factors. We've had nature run rampant twice, for example, and affect not just the state of the town and people, but houses too.

[But Loki was considering the question seriously, even while he finished his first tankard.]

Most of them have some base furnishings, so you shouldn't have to sleep on the floor. They're all a little damaged right now in the aftermath of recent events, and required a little fixing up beyond that. The Hill Houses are nicer than the others from what I've gathered, but the tree house did offer some extra security by being unable to 'get' to during one recent adventure. Basically you pull up your ladder, and no one can easily get to you.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly that. I heard whole buildings can become inaccessible because of nature.

[ Getting locked in and out of her house should her choice. While he finishes his first, she takes her first drink of her second. ]

That's the best security this place has? Pulling a ladder up in a tree house.
whose_son_am_i: (Default)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what we're facing. When there were animals going insane, including some dangerous ones, that was a good defense because nature was also not acting properly. A cottage does provide some more safety, but really I don't know of any place that's free that's truly 'secure' the way you or I would think of it.

[Loki just raises an eyebrow at her.]
writingourownstories: (ask me if i care)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-06 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll figure it out.

[ Sylvie raises an eyebrow back at him. ]

If you've got something to say, just say it.

[Loki just raises an eyebrow.]

I just did. I'm not mincing words or dancing around the subject. You asked my opinion and I gave it.
writingourownstories: (faint amusement)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

[ Perhaps it just feels odd. To be asking so many questions of him and not getting asked any in return. Granted, she offered up more information about herself this time around. ]

So what do you do here in between the "events" put on by Vaeros?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-08 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
You live. In my case, that means I have a job, I help take care of Alice, I'm teaching some others very basic magic and training myself. Life doesn't stop just because strangeness is happening.
writingourownstories: (contemplating life)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-08 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie taps a finger on her tankard, letting her gaze drift to one of the tavern windows. ]

It's funny. The difference just a moment of time can make.

[ She turns back to Loki after a long minute. ]

I wanted to live after I killed He Who Remains. Settled down, got a job, made friends, had hobbies. Wanted to try it all.
