TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

Oh absolutely. Although it translates any text you try to write into something that other's can read.

[Loki is not surprised by this tangent of thought at all.]

Mr. Gold regularly uses his for nonsense and the program doesn't care. I know other people lie on it a lot too.
writingourownstories: (loki squared)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He could have lied to her, told her it only accepts the truth in an attempt to get more information on her. Sylvie appreciates that he didn't. ]

Do you lie on it?

[ This question isn't to gain more knowledge about the world, but about him. Wondering if he keeps his personal information closer to home, or answers the questions freely. ]

What sort of questions does it ask?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-02 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Very interesting ones, in the sense that I wonder why. One was about whether you put on your trousers or socks first. Another was about what you'd like to be known for in death. I've not yet lied outright, but that's because I prefer to be more clever about it. There are also those who do know of us. Or at least a version of us, as we seem to be the catch-all for weird stuff in their myths. So hiding some things just doesn't seem worth it.

writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie is confused why one question is so ridiculous and the other so serious, what's the purpose behind it? ]

Have you got a list of the questions you've seen so far?

[ Like him, she wants to compile as much information as possible. Perhaps there's no rhyme or reason to the questions picked, or perhaps there is. ]

I've no doubt. Earth's myths are certainly something to hear about. To say nothing about tales beyond it.
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm certain I could get you one, but I haven't kept track of them. I've only been through 3 of these Sleepr events so far.

[He probably should be keeping track--there's just been so much else to keep track of.]

Oh I've heard of some beyond too. But, for example, when I arrived here and introduced myself, I met a young girl who is an anthropomorphic duck named Webby. She mentioned me in the context of some of her myths for confirmation. Some of what she mentioned either happened differently or not at all to me, though I am Loki.
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Can I use the phone to dig into past Sleepr events?

[ Look at this, there's two of him now - so that's work shared.

At the news of an anthropomorphic duck, Sylvie's head tilts curiously. ]

Are we also an anthropomorphic duck in her world? Or perhaps some other animal?
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If you really want to. And I believe we were. She and I and one other were trapped in one of the Labyrinth rooms that acted as a photograph studio. We weren't allowed to leave until we'd taken pictures. I turned into an anthropomorphic duck to look more like her, and she said I looked "right".

[OOC: I've no idea on the phones and past. Sorry]
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'll look for myself. [ On the matter of the Sleepr questions.

Somehow, hearing that seems to fit with the weirdness of the multiverse. ]

And I thought the alligator was odd. Fitting, but odd.
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--Dark-Suit--Neutral-curious)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Webby is an odd duck, it's true. She herself recognizes she's not normal. But not because she's a duck, but for other reasons. You'll know her if you meet and talk to her.

Any other questions or things I can try and clarify?
writingourownstories: (arms of disapproval)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Won't I know her by the fact that she's an anthropomorphic duck? [ All of the people she's met so far have had a human appearance, and Webby is the first she's even heard of anyone different. ]

O.B., how long was he here?

[ Sylvie's not sure she'd call him a friend, but as far as individuals from the TVA, he wasn't so bad. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
There are other strange and non-humanoid beings here too. O.B. was here about a month. Middle of winter and a snow-storm, for that matter. Bad one, even before there were these creatures roaming it made of snow. We were able to talk a bit, but it was hard to keep him focused sometimes.
writingourownstories: (arms of disapproval)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She'd be surprised if there weren't all manner of beings here. ]

I think he's just like that, not that I knew him well or very long. Probably won't stick around the TVA to find out, but I suppose I didn't hate him.

[ Sylvie wouldn't call them friends, but allies is a better word. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok -- Neutral)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
From what you told me just now about the TVA, and all I can surmise about you-- both being a version of a Loki and from talking with you now--I can see there's no love lost for you with the TVA. But O.B. seemed a good enough man, and I'm sad I didn't get to talk more with him.
writingourownstories: (loki squared)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Had the TVA been destroyed when I killed He Who Remains, I would have been glad for it.

[ Dox wouldn't have had the opportunity to prune so many branches, then. Many of the people there had been ripped from their timeline and their memories manipulated. She hates what they did, but perhaps there is hope for them to truly change. ]

There are a few people there I'd consider my allies. Loki spent more time with O.B. than I did and trusted him.

[ Loki trusted him, so I'll try to do the same. Unspoken words that hang in the air. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Discussion)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you were close. With our variant.

[It's a question, even though it's not framed as such.]
writingourownstories: (not quite right)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the first person to stand at my side in a very long time, and I didn't trust him enough.

[ Sylvie pushed him away, not just once, but multiple times. Both physically and emotionally. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Ragnarok--say that again?)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Loki is silent for a bit, and it looks like they may get safely to the town fully without any trouble.]

...since you're a Loki--which still sounds weird to say, thanks. But since you're... You likely have trust issues just like all of us do. He probably knew that.
writingourownstories: (we're doing my plan)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ His silence is matched with one of her own. ]

He does, and he knew he couldn't be trusted. [ Sylvie tucks her hands into the pockets of her coat. ] Then he had to go and save all of time by himself. The God of Stories, sitting on a lonely throne at the end of time so we could be free.

[ Both sadness and hopefulness - mix in her words. The hope that he had given her with his sacrifice. ]
whose_son_am_i: (poker face in shadow)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, that went in a way that Loki hadn't expected. There's clear surprise in his expression, and he's quiet for a bit to mull that over. Thinking about it, he truly can't say he doesn't understand. He can see why, having found family and friends here, having had growth since that Battle, even before then to Thor's Coronation day. But even if he understands, Loki is...impressed, and afraid. Because he's not sure he could make that sacrifice; even though it's proof a Loki is capable of it.

All of this is hidden though, until a small laugh is heard. There's a hint of smile to his mouth.]

Who would've guessed we had it in us, huh? To play the Hero.
writingourownstories: (a bright future)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ Sylvie is selfish, she's very aware of that fact. To get to her goal of killing the person who ruined her life, she was even willing to fight someone who had helped her. To fight against another Loki. Then she'd gone somewhere... anywhere to have some semblance of a life. Sylvie isn't sure she could make that sacrifice either, had been reluctant to even help Loki when he first asked for her help.

While they're both lost to their own thoughts, her gaze is fixed on the sky until Loki laughs at her side. Hearing it, even though he's not exactly the same, makes her smile. ]

I'm sure he had a few selfish reasons for it. Still, reminds us we're more capable than we knew.
whose_son_am_i: (Slightly weary)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think a Loki ever does anything for just one reason only. Too many layers and complexities for us to have fun with.

[Still that hint of laugh, but the smile is no longer there.]

Well... We've got options. Do you want the tavern or the club? Both have alcohol.
writingourownstories: (what do you want me to do)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ She says nothing more of it, keeping his words and look before walked through that door to herself for now. Somehow, he managed to be both selfish and selfless in the same instant.

There's hardly a beat of thought between the choices he offers her. ]

Tavern. [ The club is for indulging herself, but the tavern suits the series of events of the past few days. A drink to the God of Stories and to a future full of possibilities, to ending up in a world controlled by someone else. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Discussion)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Loki nods and leads the way to the Cask & Anvil. The Tavern isn't known for its service, the happiness of its staff, or the looks of it's food and drink. But it is open all hours, is cheap and decent enough, and has food and alcohol both. Hopefully it also has not been overlay or changed with any surprises.

Fortunately, on stepping inside, it doesn't seem to. A moment for his eyes to adjust, as Loki steps just to the side so Sylvie can enter too.]

Go find a table, I'll get the drinks. Did you want food too?
writingourownstories: (arms of disapproval)

[personal profile] writingourownstories 2024-07-04 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ She takes note of the surroundings, both to ensure nothing attacks them and to remember the way for a drink later. It looks like the sort of place one would go if looking to start a bar fight.

Nothing attacks Loki when he steps inside, and she follows him in, taking an opportunity to look around. ]

No, I'm fine.

[ Her break may have been interrupted by the appearance of the other Loki back in the 80s timeline, but there was a perk to having access to a tempad. Choosing when to leave. ]
whose_son_am_i: (Avengers--watching wary)

[personal profile] whose_son_am_i 2024-07-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Loki shrugs, and heads off to the bar part of the tavern. Ordering two ales for them, and then for them to keep coming until he says stop. It's not like he can't afford it right now. While waiting for the first two tankards he looks around without seeming to actively do so.

No signs of the strangeness so far. Hopefully it'll stay that way. It also means that once the first two tankards are brought up, he can find Sylvie easily enough. Setting one of the two in front of her, then taking his own seat. Aware of the exits and entrances, of paths that can be walked around him, just in case. She likely has a similar awareness.]
