TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

GARDEN TIME (Sorry I'm late)

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-06 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Flowers. An impassible, indestructible wall of flowers. And the only way through is to use a key, which she has to hunt for like some sort of tedious time-wasting game.

This place, she decides, cannot possibly annoy her further.

Or so she thinks, until she finally manages to unlock a door and finds herself behind yet another wall of flowers, with another keyhole. One that will no doubt also require her to hunt it down.

And this time, there's somebody else trapped with her. Somebody with an uncannily familiar face, and-

And an arrow tattoo.

Her eyes narrow, but her voice is almost venomously sweet.

"And who might you be?"

Jinora had been focused on her makeshift map, carefully marking the path that had lead her to where she currently was, and so didn't hear when Azula had first arrived. But hearing the voice pulled her out of her thoughts and talking to herself as she turned around.

Lowering the paper to her side, Jinora raised her other hand in a small wave, offering a smile and kind tone in return. She'd heard stories about lord zuko's sister but had no idea what she looked like, so didn't recognize the girl in front of her.

"Oh hi, I'm Jinora. I'm kind of a new arrival."

"Clearly."

The momentary glimpse of sarcasm fades back into that same smile again.

"Now, I believe we were trying to get out of here."

"Of course, so far each time I've come to a dead end, I've either had to back track or there's one of the sunflowers that needs a key."

Jinora had noticed the momentary slip, but just figured it was probably due to being lost in the maze. She could understand how it might make someone cranky or mad, especially with having to constantly hunt for keys. Finding the 'locked' sunflower she marked it before starting to look around.

"There should be one nearby. Though it'd be a lot easier to figure out which way to go if I could just get a higher vantage point."

"I agree, but of course if we could do that we wouldn't need the key."

It had been her first instinct- seeking elevation was a preferred tactic for her.

"Besides, the last key I found was hidden on the ground. The next one may be as well."

Forced to scrabble in the dirt like a bird scratching for insects, and the worst part is that the indignity had barely even registered at the time. She'd acclimated.

Still, she's already looking at the ground for likely hiding places- flowerbeds, rocks, bushes, small statuary, anything that might make for a convenient hiding place.

Jinora was starting to get the feeling that this girl probably really didn't want to be here, or around anyone, plus there was something about her that just didn't sit right with Jinora. It was like she just assumed she was superior or something.

"It'll be more effective if we coordinate our search, so that we're not searching the same area multiple times, or missing any spots."

Maybe both starting at the lock and going from there, Azula could take one half of the clearing and Jinora would do the other.

"If you found the last one on the ground then it might mean that someone is just dropping them after they use it. So it might be close by."

SORRY FOR THE DELAY

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-16 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she's heard worse plans, she might as well.

"Fine. You search near the exit, I'll see if it's hidden somewhere annoying."

See? Look at her cooperating with the stranger.

...okay, 'cooperating' looks a lot like 'giving orders and being surly, but nevertheless. She doesn't wait for a reply before she starts scanning the enclosed garden for hiding places.
spiritandmind: (Aang face)

No problem, I don't mind waiting.

[personal profile] spiritandmind 2024-07-16 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alright, we'll split our efforts and should find it faster that way."

She wasn't entirely certain she liked the way that the other had put it. Or the fact that she didn't even know what to call the girl, and the expression that Jinora made was one that she'd been told made her look quite a bit like her grandfather. In fact she didn't know anything about the person she was currently stuck with.

"Have you been here long?"

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Over a year and a half so far, and still no closer to my goal of escape."

A radiant ball of optimism, is our Azula.

"You came during a relatively safe period."

Is she suggesting that there are more dangerous periods around here? She sure is.

"That's good then, I can learn about the village and settle in then. And maybe I'll be able to help prepare for the next time there's a problem or threat."

She'd be happy to help with evacuation plans, or setting up shelters, maybe collecting food and nonperishables for when something occurred. Of course she'd have to learn a little more about the people and the needs of those in the village first.

"Has anyone been able to get out?"
itstillhurt: (pic#15818566)

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-20 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Not of their own volition. Some return where they came from without warning or explanation, apparently also at the whim of our captor."

Feeling excited yet, Jinora?

"And I can speak from experience when I tell you that any attempt to protect these idiotic, obstinate sentimentalists from danger is an exercise in futility. Spare yourself the bother."

Not that we're bitter. Definitely not.
spiritandmind: (Sad)

[personal profile] spiritandmind 2024-07-20 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Even if it might seem futile, I can't just leave them to suffer and deal with it on their own. If we all work together then the dangerous situations that happen won't be as bad. And if no one's been able to get out on their own, maybe it means that everyone needs to come together as one."

The power of a group was far stronger than even the most skilled and talented of individuals; that was a lesson that Jinora had learned when they'd had to face Zaheer. But she was starting to get the feeling that this girl wasn't the type that worked well with others, and that this was probably a sore subject.

"I'm sure that you miss home, and you'd like to get back as soon as you can. But in the meantime, wouldn't it good to have someone to help out?"
itstillhurt: (pic#15818576)

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"That certainly hasn't been my experience so far."

Apparently 'sore subject' is right, because that was a shift from bitter to outright snappish, and the shift back to her controlled neutral tone is a lot more noticeably forced.

"But if you really think it's worth your time, far be it from me to stop you. Maybe you'll get lucky."

And there's enough insincere sweetness in that sentence to peel paint. Yes, definitely nerves touched.
spiritandmind: (Uncertain)

[personal profile] spiritandmind 2024-07-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I see."

Jinora could tell that she'd obviously said the wrong thing, and her tone became a bit more calm and neutral rather than the optimistic and cheery tone that she'd been speaking with. For a few moments she just let the silence linger there, as she looked for the key, finding it soon enough at the base of the of the hibiscus plants.

"Even if it's not everyone, but there is a quote that I remember reading somewhere. 'Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.'"

Turning around she held the key out and offered it to the stranger she'd been speaking with.

"I think helping you would be worth my time, if you were to ever need it. Not that I think you would."
itstillhurt: (pic#15818548)

[personal profile] itstillhurt 2024-07-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
She regards the key with a scowl for several long, silent moments. Finally, a smile creeps across her face without ever quite meeting her eyes.

"How sweet of you to offer. I'll keep it in mind."

She accepts the key, unlocks the sunflower 'gate,' and steps through to the next part of the garden, but she does pause it and add- in a voice that's just short of sincere-

"It was so nice to meet you, Jinora."

Then she tosses the key back to Jinora and walks away.
spiritandmind: (Sad)

[personal profile] spiritandmind 2024-07-23 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope that you find what you're looking for soon."

Jinora offered the other a small bow. not following immediately after her. She could tell that there was a chance that whoever the girl was, that she didn't likely want the company of Jinora any longer than was necessary. And there was something that still was creeping along the back of her mind about the encounter but she couldn't quite figure it out. Almost like there was something important she should remember from her history lessons.

"May the wind guide you to where you are meant to be."

She looked at the key, closing her hand around it and holding it closely. Suddenly she felt like she was lost all over again.
