TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

".. Erm, a-- a what game now?"

At least he does understand the latter word here, but the former has absolutely zero meaning to him. Not separately, and not in combination with it. Even the odd sight he's witnessing right now doesn't really explain it. What about this is a game? It doesn't seem like one to him!

Hell, Finnick doesn't even look like he's having fun, which means the game is missing its point entirely!

"Are you familiar with any of this?" W-Wait, should Inigo be? He feels like all of this is really weird, but the other guy seems weirdly confident about his assessment.. Inigo wasn't worried about looking like an idiot at first, but he might be now! Just a little bit..!

Finnick looks over at the kid. He's definitely from a world with no technology, then.

"Only a little. Don't worry, though, I don't think this is dangerous."

He gives a reassuring smile. He knows being caught off-guard by new things in your environment and not knowing what they are can be scary. Hell, he was scared just a second ago.

"It's just... A simulation. It's not real."

Finnick is very familiar with simulations by now.

He casts the line again, and this time when the green bar comes up, he tries reeling in when the fish is in the green, and stops when it moves out of it.

A little bell dings, and a fish-like, pixelated object flies out of the water and directly into Finnick's hands, somehow. He frowns at it. It's flat, like cardboard.

"Well, this isn't a fish at all. That's disappointing."

flatteries: (now let me at the truth)

At least Finnick's last remark does prove that whole 'not real' part, even if Inigo still doesn't fully get it. He gives the fish-like thing in Finnick's hands a half-curious, half-confused gaze, and then says: "May I..?"

If Finnick approves, Inigo will definitely move his hand to carefully touch the fish-thing as well. So carefully. It's almost as if Inigo is worried that his hand might evaporate the moment he touches the thing, though thankfully nothing happens when he does touch it.

It just definitely feels odd. Not like a fish, he can share that opinion that Finnick seems to have.

Though that begs the question of what it is, then.

Inigo's eyebrows draw together into a concerned frown, and his gaze slides back up to Finnick's face as he asks: "What exactly is a.. "simulation"?"

He points at the object in the other's hands.

"Is that a simulation?"

Finnick moves the "fish" closer to Inigo, allowing him to touch it. He looks so confused, poor guy. Not that Finnick isn't sort of confused himself, but he's grown used to this type of weird shit.

"Ah..." He thinks for a moment. "A simulation is something that feels real, but isn't. Like how this looks like a fish but it isn't. This would be a simulated fish, I guess. But it's not a good one because you don't really believe it's a fish, do you? In a very good simulation, we might be sitting here, on this dock, seeing the water and trees around us, hearing the waves lap, feeling the breeze on our skin, but none of it would be real. In the real world, maybe we're sitting in a dark room with a headset on that's simulating all these things for us. Think of it like a waking dream, usually caused by really advanced technology, or magic. I'd say it's magic in this case."

It's a hard thing to explain, damn.

"Does that make... Any sense at all?"

[personal profile] flatteries 2024-07-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
.. you know, Finnick? That last question? It's a very good one. And a warranted one, since Inigo mostly has a very, very confused expression on his face throughout that entire explanation. There's definitely some words in there that Inigo has no idea whatsoever of, after all, like "headset"..

So he seems to need a moment or two to process the thought, and then when he looks at Finnick and speaks up again, it's with: "I.. know what magic is?"

That's a start, right. It's something.

"I am not entirely sure I understand the rest of it." Not even with this fish as an actual example right in front of his eyes. "Do you mean to say it is some form of illusion magic?"

Now that is a term Inigo could work with!

[personal profile] odare 2024-07-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah! Illusion magic, that's exactly it. It's just an illusion of a fish, and so is this fishing game. This world itself-" he gestures to everything around them, "is real as far as I can tell, but who knows."

That's a better way of explaining it. Those with no technology in their worlds usually have magic instead.
flatteries: (and i will change my ways)

[personal profile] flatteries 2024-07-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh-- Yes, this world is definitely real. As real as any place."

At least, it seems that way to Inigo. He can't really imagine that he would have spent practically an entire year now in a place that'd just turn out to have been fake all along. That would be really awkward.

Besides, this place looks so much more real than whatever is going on with the fish Finnick is holding, let alone the way in which he acquired it in the first place.

"Forgive me if it is too bold of a question, but.. are you relatively new here?" Otherwise, Inigo imagines, he wouldn't be saying 'but who knows.' Besides, he doesn't think he's seen Finnick around before-- but then again, it's a big place. There are plenty of people he doesn't know.

[personal profile] odare 2024-07-25 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, that's reassuring, I guess." He still doesn't feel like he can be completely sure, based on what he's experienced before with simulated realities, but it's still good to hear this kid being so sure. Finnick lays back on the dock, putting his hands behind his head and squinting up at the guy.

"Yeah, brand new. I got here a few days ago." How is that a bold question?

"And you?"
flatteries: (a man for flowers)

[personal profile] flatteries 2024-07-30 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be surprised what some people take offense to in this place, Finnick!

"The opposite, I suppose." Even though what follows likely isn't very good news for Finnick's - or anyone's - chances of getting home, Inigo smiles a little bit as he says it anyway, though there is an apologetic edge to it as he does. "I have been here for almost a year now."

Which is a long time!

"I have been trying to look for a way for those among us who wish to return home to be able to do so all that time, but.. it seems that Vaeros is keeping his distance from us, no matter what happens."
odare: (038)

[personal profile] odare 2024-08-01 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
"A year. Wow."

Don't worry- Finnick never had hope of going home.

"Doesn't surprise me. He wants to stay in control. I'm not about to get my hopes up about going home, especially since I'm dead there."
flatteries: (how could i ever be so dumb)

[personal profile] flatteries 2024-08-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
... oh.

Oh.

Inigo looks horrified for a moment. Not because Finnick is dead - he isn't even the first person Inigo has heard this from, and he has seen a whole lot of death back home - but more because Inigo sure managed to shove his foot into his mouth with that one, huh. He looks a little embarrassed, and then sputters:

"Ah, please-- forgive me for being so presumptuous. I did not wish to remind you of that fact." Because Finnick seems so young, relatively speaking. If he had a death, it can't have been a pleasant one. "Still-- If you have a second chance at life here, then it makes it all the more important to also improve this place for those who wish to remain and live here!"

You know, as opposed to a place where all this weird stuff happens. Fake fish. Odd simulations. That doesn't exactly make for a great home, does it.

Oh, boy, here we go again. Can never just say you're dead without there being a big fuss.

Finnick laughs good-naturedly.

"Don't worry about it. It's really not a big deal."

He's over it.

"I agree. I'll try to help people here when I can. What, in your opinion, would make this place better?"
