TDM #10

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.
When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.
Will you drink it or not?
There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:
You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.
With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!
Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.
Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).
Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!
All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:
A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?
Not quite.
The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.
Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.
And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.
Welcome to the labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.
With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.
You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

"You know Korra?!? Yes we're from the same world, I helped with some of her training and we're friends."
Remembering her manners after the inital outburst of happiness, Jinora took a moment to compose herself and offered Luz a small bow.
"Sorry, I'm Jinora, and Airbending master from Republic City. Though I've really been traveling all over the place with the other Airbenders recently to help the Avatar."
no subject
Luz had to flex a little, just to show Jinora that yes, she was indeed building up some mildly impressive muscle.
"Hey, hey, you don't have to curb your enthusiasm! Go on with yourself! That;s really cool though! Korra was trained by an airbender, wasn't she?"
no subject
"She came to airbender island and was trained by my dad. He's the head of the air nomads and the son of the previous avatar, Avatar Aang. But she wasn't really good at dealing with any of the spiritual stuff, so I had to help her since eve dad isn't the best at it."
Finally she took a breath,
"But you've been training with Korra? It must be pretty hard keeping up with her."
no subject
No matter what world you went to, that dedication needed everything that you could give to it.
"Right, I heard about Aang from Toph! Oh, but not the Toph YOU know, I bet. There's a a weird...displacement about this world you might have to think about."
She nodded. Yup. Korra described how she'd been at that time, and that had to change.
Having the title of Avatar was a heavy thing.
"Oh, of course. She's strong, and her arm game? So jealous. But the whole point is to learn, not to see what I lack. Her world and the one I was from are very different. So I just want to learn from her, and hopefully make myself better."
no subject
"Really? Milo would be excited to here that, he seemed to be really excited to meet her the first time. But she probably wouldn't know who any of us are."
Jinora did have to admit that Korra was in pretty great shape physically. She wondered if that was part of the reason why everyone kept falling in love with her. After all there had been Bolin, Mako, and then Asami. It was pretty complicated for a young girl to follow with everything else that was going on.
"So you don't have bending where you're from? But you have magic, how does it work?"
Now Jinora was curious. She'd learned so much about bending, but never really thought about or looked into anything related to magic, or what she'd seen Luz do earlier.
no subject
Not that this would stop her.
"No, she wouldn't," Luz confessed. "Toph is just a little younger than I am now, and when Korra met her, apparently she was pretty old. Same goes for Zuko. I know that's going to complicate things a bit."
Luz imagined it was partly that, but also that Korra was genuinely fun to be around and had a warmth that had seen bad times and still never waned. Luz, who'd gone through some pretty rough times herself, was inspired seeing that from Korra, and looked up to her a bit.
"There's magic in the world I stumbled into. I live in a pretty normal world, but one day I walked through a portal that took me to a demon realm called the Boiling Isles. They naturally have magic, but I learned another way to cast."
She took a piece of paper, scribbled a symbol on it, then gave it a tap and the paper turned to a floating ball of light, slowly ascending.
"Glyphs!"
no subject
It wasn't something that Jinora seemed worried about, but rather curious and little excited to see. After all if Toph and Lord Zuko were from then, maybe that meant that Jinora could meet Aang. She was sure he'd love to hear about all the airbenders and how they weren't alone anymore.
Studying the drawing that Luz made, she watched the paper as the glyph changed and turned it into a ball of light.
"Wow! So can only certain people do it, or is everyone from there able to use them? How do they work? Do you have to draw them on paper?"
What if you drew them in the dirt? A thousand question began to run through Jinora's head as she watched the ball of light rise into the air.
no subject
Gran-Gran? Ah, her Abuela, probably. She couldn't blame Jinora for wanting to see Zuko and Toph in their prime: to her, they were legends. To Luz, one was a guy who owned a tea shop and turned into a dragon, while the other was her mischievous friend she recently got her butt kicked by.
"In the Isles, anyone can, but no one actually knows about them since they're a lost art and everyone native can cast magic on their own. I learned how to do it one day when the, uh, Titan of that world revealed the means of HOW. It sounds weird, but its true! And no, its actually NOT bound by paper! As long as you have the means and you know now, you can cast on just about everything!"
Paper was just the easiest and quickest way to do it.
no subject
Jinora had wondered and hoped to get the story someday, along with what happened to Lord Zuko's mother, but Ikki and Milo always interrupted so she'd never gotten to hear it.
"I'd like to learn more about it if you're willing to teach me."
I apologize ahead of time for not specifically describing the glyph. I'll link to it next time!
Luz wasn't sure what to say that was more accurate than that, but that was Azula. Heck, what was stopping anyone from using that to describe her?
That was a story Luz could only hope to hear herself.
"Cool! keep in mind, I'm still not sure why it works in this dimension, but it works for me! I started actually by capturing an image of a glyph while recording my mentor showing me how to cast a circle. Within that space, I saw there was a symbol, and then I drew and activated my first light glyph."
Luz demonstrated by drawing a perfect circle with the correct symbols and tapped the ground. Out of that came a brilliant ball of light, hovering a moment before rising up and slowly fading away.
No worries! I loved Owl house so I know the glyphs. I have a Raine journal tucked away.
Jinora had still been coming to grips with not having her bending as a young prodigy, and from the stories that she'd heard, Azula was just as talented when she was younger too. But that was a meeting she could worry about when and if it happened. Besides with Korra there it wasn't like Jinora had to worry about it too much.
"So you just draw the symbol? Or is there something more to it?"
Because that seemed like it would be pretty bad, you'd never be able to write them down, or put them into a book.
"What happens if you draw one on top of another?"
Thank goodness, having to explaining glyphs over and over IC makes me a little lazy sometimes
"I could think of worse things. I'm adjusting all right, considering."
Luz would have to ask Korra more about her younger friend, if only so Luz made sure she didn't accidentally say the wrong thing by mistake, particularly when it came to "younger" Zuko and Toph.
"You draw the symbol and visualize what you want it to do, and if you want to make stronger, make the symbol stronger and group them in a chain."
Luz shook her head. "They'll cancel each other out and cause small explosions. The whole thing with glyphs is that in a simple form, they can do some cool stuff, but if you know how to use the proper chains for them, you start to create NEW spells that can do different things! It's like its own language: putting them on top of each other is like trying to hear when two people are talking at the same time, and that's why the spell will fail."
no subject
"How many different glyphs are there?"
Jinora would have to see if there was a library and if there were any books on them. In her mind she pictured chaining them together to look something like a flip book. For now though she was realizing that this probably wasn't the best time though, both of them had been in the middle of something, and the middle of the street probably wasn't the best place for a lesson.
"Actually, maybe we could meet up sometime and talk about them in more detail. I still have a lot to learn about things here, including the new abilities that I have from the potion."
no subject
Boy, had that trick wound up blowing up in her face.
"Four. Ice, fire, plant and light. Sort of like your elements. But you can make other kinds of magic when you know how to get the glyph arranged in the right combination. From turning invisible to making a teleportation glyph, Luz knew that as long as you had the proper grasp, you had access to all types of abilities!
Luz made a mental note to show Jinora examples of these later.
"That'd be fine! Oh, you drank it then! What one did you get?"
no subject
"It was blue, almost like the deepest waters of the spirit world. But Korra said it would give me the ability to heal, like Gran-gran. So that's what I've been trying to focus on."
It wasn't something that she had much experience with, but she had been practicing and right now she could relieve a sore muscle and maybe a minor scrape but that was about it. No where near what her grandmother was capable of with her water bending.
no subject
Luz was still trying to get over Alberto leaving, someone she wanted to see and hang out with. It was fine. It was FINE.
"Ok, so you at least know what its for. Some of us had to figure that out on our own. I had to ask around to find out. Can you use any of it right now?"
no subject
Well Korra had been pretty sure about what it did, and it had been one of the reasons why Jinora had decided to drink it after all. Since she'd been practicing a little, but there hadn't been too much for her to practice on just yet.
"Some, but I'm still learning so I'm not the best at it yet."
no subject
The way that Luz absolutely did NOT go about it, but no one needs to know that, even though everyone did.
"Oh no, that definitely takes time. I could only turn into one animal at first! Then again, from what Korra told me you're supposed to be a prodigy, so I'm sure it won't take you as long as I did!"
no subject
"I just started training when I was young, so I picked up on things pretty quick. And the spirits were just always friendly and helpful, so there was a natural connection with them."
But she also put in the work and studied hard as well, not just with her bending but with her education and learning as well. She'd made sure to learn what she could about new and emerging technology like radios, and even movers.
no subject
And she imagined that Jinora felt the same way.
"You don't have to be modest! I know it takes time and dedication to get good, so if it comes naturally to you, its because you made that happen!"
Wait a minute.
"What's a 'mover?'
no subject
Jinora offered a small bow in appreciation. And then took a moment to think about how to explain movers.
"It's kind of like radio, but for pictures. They use a camera and a long roll of film to take a bunch of pictures that only seconds apart. Later they take the roll of pictures and load it into a projector. As the film moves along this conveyor belt, the pictures are displayed on the screen, and since they're so close in time it looks like the picture is moving. They're like a play, but there's no one on stage and it's in black and white."
no subject
Luz returned the bow, because Jinora looked her age and thought this was just polite.
"Oh, I get it! You're talking about a movie! Man, I'll bet people from my world in its time would be surprised to hear it being referred to as a "mover." I actually have a few of those at my place."
no subject
Jinora still preferred books to the moving pictures, being allowed to use her own imagination and preference for how the characters looked. And because generally the stories were written a little better.
no subject
Luz was striving to give information, but she too preferred books to movies, since movies sometimes bowed out to a director's vision. She too preferred to have her own version of how things turned out.
no subject
Though at times it as pretty obvious and didn't look quite right with the way he'd move through the air.
"Maybe we could watch one of yours so I could see how different they are."
