TDM #7

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.
When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.
Will you drink it or not?
There is a parchment, handwritten, and it simply gives you a welcoming:
“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Per our agreement, you have consented to live your life here for an undetermined amount of time. In exchange, I will grant you the wish that you desire the most.”
You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: poinsettias and holly. You’ll soon find out that being around the poinsettias give you an odd sense of joy no matter how confusing the situation may seem and the holly, which is left over from the holiday season, offer different effects - standing too close to blooming holly will encourage a strong desire to be impulsive or try out something they never would have otherwise tried (whether it’s a wild new hobby, or shaving their entire head, or something else).

As harsh temperatures drop across Somnius, the townsfolk seem taken aback by how frigid cold the city is becoming. They expect this year to be chilly, but not exactly this chilly. Seemingly out of nowhere and overnight, a massive blizzard sweeps across the city, piling snow high and trapping Dreamers and townsfolk alike in their dwellings. Perhaps it's not wise to go out -- perhaps it might be better to snuggle up with your housemates instead.
As the day continues, the blizzard roars on, piling more and more snow on top of itself and making the air dense. Those who are adventurous enough to try and leave their dwelling may do so, but it poses as a risk with both high winds and freezing temperatures. Characters who have a fire element from their potion might be suited to be rescuers in this situation. Heat does make the snow melt and keep people warm, after all. They might be someone's only chance for survival, after all.
However, through the dense snow, something is lurking and they are very hard to see. It's the return of the Snow Angels, but because of the intense coldness, appeasing the Snow Angels by offering warmth will not work. Their weapons are drawn and anyone that approaches them at all will be attacked. Unlike last year, heat will NOT hurt the Snow Angels but ironically enough, making snowballs and throwing them at the Snow Angels will ... somehow ward them off. Clobbering Snow Angels with many snowballs will reduce them to just mounds of snow and their sword will vanish into pixie dust.
Any character who gets struck with their sword will risk severe frostbite which can be slowed down and cured by characters with healing abilities.

When the blizzard finally subsides, the bitter cold and snow will linger (As will the snow angels, so be careful.) Of course, this means a lot of places will be harder to reach- the path along starlight cliffs, for instance, will be far more treacherous and dangerous to access, and much of Lake Omen will be frozen over.
The path down to the beach, however, is still miraculously clear and easy to traverse- and, more importantly, there's a new path across sheets of ice across the ocean that have frozen over, broken, and refrozen, creating a long ice bridge that leads to a small island. On that island will be found a hot spring, complete with long-abandoned signs of use. This was clearly once an active onsen on this island, and for the most part, the natural warmth of the area has kept the winter cold at bay, meaning the hot springs are still accessible, steamy, and safe for visitors!
There are several springs of varying size and temperature. Anybody who bathes in these springs will find that they’re comforting and relaxing, soothing away the aches and tensions of your muscles and your mind alike. A few people may hear an odd, barely-audible whispering voice or echo on the edge of your hearing while you’re in the water, but don’t worry about that, that’s probably nothing. However, those who bathe in the waters may also notice a few odd side effects:
- The most common effect will be uncontrollable emission of steam and bubbles from the bather’s mouth. The steam doesn’t burn them, the bubbles don’t interfere with speech and breathing, but both will be a mildly distracting nuisance until you’ve fully dried off from the spring
- Many of the springs will make those who bathe in them feel incredibly refreshed and energized; maybe even too energized. You swear you’re not normally this hyper. Don’t worry, it will wear off after several very productive, very exhausting hours.
- Some of the springs will enhance the most dominant personality traits of those who bathe in them. Anxious? Try ‘neurotic wreck.’ Brave? ‘Stupidly reckless.’ Reserved? ‘Completely emotionless.’ You get the idea. On the other hand, others will neutralize those personality traits, returning them to normal or even inverting them entirely. This can last anywhere from a day or two to a couple of weeks.
- A few of the springs will induce a unique transformation. Those exposed to it will find that whenever they’re submerged in water, they grow gills and webbed limbs that make them fully amphibious and capable of swimming effortlessly. This transformation doesn’t impair them on dry land, aside from their skin being notably cold and clammy to the touch. Those who are already amphibious or aquatic by nature aren’t visibly affected. This will also last for anywhere from days to weeks.
Those under the effects of any hot spring will find that the mermaids in the unfrozen portions of Lake Omen are no longer as hostile to them. In fact, those affected by the aquatic spring, even those who are otherwise unchanged, will find that the mermaids are quite friendly and very chatty, though an unsettling amount of their conversations seem to revolve around how appetizing your fellow villagers look.
Welcome to the labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.
With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.
You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.
I came in like a wrecking ball~ (Arrival)
There are a lot of nice plants here, but the second she hears the familiar voice calling out to Doty, Vex turns to Trinket at her side. The bear is sniffing the air violently in search, letting her know it's not just her. A wide smile over takes her face. She forgot to check with the others about the effects from the plants this particular cycle, but it wouldn't matter because joy and impulsivity are in need when she knows that voice.]
Tary? [Ranger and bear are definitely moving quickly and the blond hair, fancy clothes and handsome (and goofy face) are all there.] No, no demons. Worse. We've been coerced away by some sort of Archfey.
no subject
[Maybe it's because it's been a while since he saw his bestie after they parted ways, maybe there's something in the air, but Taryon takes several bounding steps to grab Vex and pull her into a tight hug.]
It's so good to see you again! [He's just strong enough to lift her an inch. He didn't realize just how much he missed her already, even though they've both been kidnapped by an Archfey--]
Hold on. Hold on. [He can't erase the grin on his face as he pulls away.] Are we in the Feywild? Did you guys get up to something without me?
no subject
You have no idea, Tary! It feels like forever since I've last seen you. [It's been close to a year, but a lot of things have happened, plus, if he doesn't remember Folkmore, it's going to be a lot weirder as she tries to explain things. Luckily, she has Vax and Pike to back her up. Caleb too.]
Why don't we head to the castle and we can talk? Vax, Pike, Scanlan, Grog and Percy are here too. And, well, there's a lot going on. But, gods, I've missed you so much.
no subject
[Like Vax's wings are a Raven Queen thing. Vex clearly was so good at being the Mistress of the Grey Hunt that she also got an aesthetic reward.]
Well, good to hear almost everyone's here. [He figures Keyleth is doing some important druid investigation things, of course. She's the most capable magic user in the group and familiar enough with the mysteries of this plane.] How's everyone been these past few days?
no subject
Yes, it's another thing that Vax and I have in common, but I still used my broom to go flying with a rider. Like with Percy or new friends. I'll tell you more about the wings when we get to the castle.
[He's about half-right at least.]
Few days? Tary, I haven't seen you in nearly a year. What's the last thing you remember from home?
no subject
[He worries what state she might be in: does she need a cleric? A Revivify spell? Has she gotten into danger and needs to be rescued?]
I was in Whitestone, fixing Doty. There was nothing else going on, so I went to sleep. [He thinks back: no, he doesn't recall eating any suspicious pastries.] Did time pass differently for you?
no subject
There's so much that we need to discuss. As far as I know, Keyleth is fine. She was here at one point, but returned back to Exandria. [Back to the fight with Vecna, but that's neither here nor there.] Right now, darling, we both need some wine and I'll tell you what I know.
But first, I have to ask. Have you met Scanlan yet? [He mentioned Whitestone, but she knows that when she last talked to her dearest friend back on Exandria, he was talking about going back to Wildemount to deal with his family.]
no subject
I have, yes. I remember seeing him and a good number of you being upset about it. I didn't want to pry since you and Vax looked so happy, but...is everything okay with him? I just felt like I walked into the middle of some, you know, ongoing drama. [At least he had Lionel to share his confusion with.]
no subject
[She sighs as he talks about what he knows of Scanlan.]
Well, we love him and he's been a part of our ragtag family since the beginning, but the way he left was rather... He was a shit and he said some really awful things. He's apologized and Vax and I never really blamed him, but Pike and Grog were a different story.
He only returned to tell us about the unusual behavior around the mountains near Ank'Harel, but, it turned out to be the Briarwoods, again.
[And if she never has to deal with Delilah and Sylas Briarwood after this whole mess with Vecna, it'll be too damn soon.]
no subject
He trusts Vex - and of her view on whatever caused Scanlan to part ways with the rest of Vox Machina - and if she is sympathetic towards the small bard, then he supposes that he can trust him with this friends.] Those guys, the ones behind Percy's...?
[He doesn't feel like finishing that sentence.]
Well, we're all safe and together. Why don't we find someplace nice to sit down and chat? The garden is nice, but I could use some actual chairs.
no subject
And while she's had some questionable alcohol in her time, she does enjoy a glass (or a bottle) of good, aged alcohol.]
Yes, exactly them. [She really doesn't want to talk about what the Briarwoods had done to the de Rolos. It's still something that Percy and Cassandra don't talk about, not if they can help it. Perhaps because while they were out of Whitestone and the people there were happy and free again, they weren't dead. At least Vex and Vax had the joy of slaying Thordak and Raishan and the rest of the Chroma Conclave to avenge their mother.]
Darling, I'm taking you to Castle Exandria. We can talk there with the others. I can make you food and give you wine. And then we can find a room for you to sleep and refresh yourself.
Oh, and you're not the only denizen from Wildemount here. Caleb is Zemenian and Essek is from Xhorhaus.
no subject
He finds small comfort in knowing the Briarwoods aren't here - Percival is safe from those people.]
You have a castle? Why didn't you tell me in the first place? Of course I'd love to go there! [The flowers remind him of the magic that stone buildings hold: straight from the era of myth, cornerstones of fantasy novels.] You must be living in style out here in...whatever this place is called.
[He really doesn't want to live in a tree. He hopes that most people don't live in trees here.]
Huh. I guess I should say hi to them. Do you think you can also invite them to dinner?
no subject
If the Briarwoods were here, Vex would take great delight in taking Sylas and Delilah apart EVERY time she saw their fucking faces. She's not visited Inferna here yet, but she's sure it's a place those two assholes should just take up residence in and never leave.]
Mm, yes, there are a few castles here in Somnius, for larger groups. It's very convenient, but at this point it just feels like we have very large houses. They're not even half as big as Whitestone Castle. More like Greyskull Keep outside of Emon.
[And, excuse you, she and Vax have lived in very nice treehouses both here and in Folkmore. And... well, they also lived out on the open road as teens. But, she knows exactly where Tary grew up and he might love the castle with all of the changes that Essek has done.]
Darling, Caleb and Essek live with us already. It's complicated, but we met Caleb before we came here and he followed us here. Essek is his fiancé.
no subject
[Not that the Third House of Whitestone wasn't to his standards - he helped Vex turn it into a home fit for a lady (but he will admit that his genius with interior decorating helped with the majority of the work). Someone from a wealthy background must be in charge of having the place look splendid, and Taryon's mother had found less expensive ways to bring some modicum of happiness into the Darrington estate - Taryon learned quite a bit from watching her.]
Oh? I hope it's not too crowded... [Although the phrase his fiancé has his attention. It would be nice to have a chance to talk with those two men, and living together will facilitate that.] But- [He straights and crosses his arms with conviction.] if you trust this Caleb guy, then we should get along just fine.
no subject
Taryon, if you'd wanted, you could have lived in Castle Whitestone. Percy would have gladly found a room for you there.
As far as room in Castle Exandria, I assure you that it has 8 separate bedrooms and Percy and I are sharing, as are Caleb and Essek. Vax, Scanlan, Pike and Grog make up four other rooms, meaning you have your choice of two other rooms, but I do hope that you and Caleb will get along. He's a dear man and has a big heart.
no subject
Oh, I don't know if I could. It's his house meant for him and his sister and you...
[It felt so big for such few people.]
I think your house was cozier, anyway. The estate was huge but empty, and I wanted something different.
[A house that felt like it was lived in.]
Perfect. I'll pick whichever is bigger. So. This Caleb. What's he like?
no subject
Castle Whitestone is a massive building that is meant to hold the de Rolo family, their friends, visitors, and some vassals as well as servants. Each other member of Vox Machina has a room of their own there. [She leans against him for a minute as a type of hug as they continue walking.] But I hope that you know that you will always have a room in the home of the Baroness of the Third House of Whitestone.
[She smiles at his assertion. It's so like him and she's missed him so much, but the question about Caleb lights up her face a bit.]
He's Zemenian, so he's a bit quiet, but he's brilliant and a powerful wizard. He's kind and gentle. He reminds me of Percy when we first met. Troubled, sad, and in need of a hug. Which is probably why I was drawn to him so easily. He's always ready for adventures though.
no subject
[There's a home with his mother (and Lionel, soon) where he will help the people of the Truscan Vale. There's also a home where he is surrounded by friends and reminders how how his life changed in the course of a year.]
A wizard? I could learn a few things about enchantments from him. Does he like anything in particular? Some topic of conversation I can broach with him? Should I make something for him? [He freezes.] I forgot I don't have my magic here.
[How will he ever show off his skills in battle?]
no subject
[Percy is all hers. And she will break anyone who tries to touch him.]
Essek is also a wizard. He's a drow as well. And you can get your magic back, but what potion did you receive in your welcome pouch?
no subject
But there is a limit to friendship, and that is Vex's love of her life. Taryon is silent and nods awkwardly. Even if he hadn't acted on his attraction towards Percival, it was nerve-wracking to think what Vex would have done in retaliation if he let it slip any sooner.]
You are very protective of your treasure. I respect that. [And he can move on to better topics.] I got the red one. It's not my own magic, is it?
no subject
She knows about Tary's attraction to Percy. She doesn't blame him. Percy is fucking hot. It's part of the reason she married him, after all. She also trusts both Tary and Percy to not hurt her because she could wreck them both and they'd deserve it. :) ]
As one should be, darling. Protecting your own is rather important. [She squeezes his arm and continues with the topic change.] No, it's not, but it is some sort of elemental magic: fire, water, earth or wind.
I received a blue potion that allows me to heal. Vax received a gold potion and he can transform into an animal at will.
no subject
He still needs to find a boyfriend for himself at some point.]
So...major healing, like how Pike does? And Vax gets powers like Keyleth? [Clerics, druids...elements bring wizards to mind.] I hope I don't get fire. My clothes are going to get so damaged.
no subject
But, she puts finding Tary a nice boyfriend on her list of things to do once more. He deserves to be happy. And something tells her that him finding Lawrence here is probably not going to happen. Time to vet more men.]
All of the powers from the potions start off small. I could heal paper cuts and small knicks at first and then have made my way up to healing major injuries. The same goes for the other powers. Whatever you get, it will be controllable.
no subject
[It would be a good way to draw him out and defeat him, but Taryon has grown and knows that he should think through cool ideas. Or he remembers some of the time.]
no subject
[She can't help but laugh at his assessment of the fey of their world.]
You're not exactly wrong about the fey, but considering we're all more likely to rebuild this place than destroy it, I would suggest that you still avoid destruction. The gelflings and goblins that are native to this place are in a precarious holding pattern with us over whether they like us or not.
