TDM #10

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my Labyrinth. Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Sunflowers and Hibiscus. You’ll soon find out that being around the Sunflower makes it difficult to pass through the already disorienting garden, even with the light guiding you. Where patches of them grow, even if only waist-high, you cannot pass through them, over them, or even destroy them to get them out of your way. In each grouping that blocks your path, there is one that has a key-shaped opening in the middle of the flower. Maybe the key is nearby? (Spoiler: it's probably under a rock nearby that you forgot to check!) The hibiscus offers an entirely different effect - inhaling the pollen grants you the temporary ability to shoot fireballs out of your hands. But be careful, those fireballs are difficult to control and seem to bounce in random directions no matter how hard you try to aim (cannot be used to destroy the sunflowers). The effect ends once you step out of the garden.

It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This.

Somnius is once again recovering from a devastating blow. Buildings need to be restored to their former glory and the emotional turmoil of the previous weeks surely needs to be alleviated. What better way to lighten the mood than a little fun for the whole family? A new arcade has appeared in town, beckoning residents with its stone doors set wide open.

With multiple levels, a variety of games and even a snackbar, Appl3 Pi Arcade is sure to be a hit!

Of course, as with everything that ever happens in Somnius, the arcades appearance is not without some complications. For one, playing the games inside might see characters teleported into the machine itself, perfectly pixelated to fit the game they're in. Hope you weren't about to fight the final boss, because now you might be fighting for your life! The good news is, if you die in the game... you don't die in real life and are just popped back out into the arcade again.

Strange things happen outside the arcade too. Walking down the road you might suddenly see a healthbar pop up above someone's head. Are you supposed to fight them? Are they going to fight you? Best to be cautious and reach for any trusty weapons you have just in case. Weapons that have become pixelated and can be pulled seemingly out of nowhere like some kind of hammerspace. They are also prone to breaking and shattering into glimmering pixel pieces (your normal weapons are still intact, don't worry).

Boxes and pots around Somnius are somehow more breakable than usual, smashed open with a single swing of those pixel weapons and producing gold coins! What a shame gold coins aren't the currency here. But if you don't want to destroy more things around Somnius, why not try fishing instead? That seems safe - if not suddenly more difficult with the fishing minigame that popped up in front of you. Quick! Keep the fish icon in the green bar or you'll lose it!

All things considered? It's all relatively harmless fun up until-

But Enough Talk, Have At You!

Vaeros wakes up. For those new to town, this means nothing. For those that were here for the castle raid? They can rest assured that they're in for a surprise. The Overlord of Visium has finally awoken from his Hyalily induced coma and he is furious. A shout echoes from the castle:

"Did you think you had won, dear Dreamers? Did you think you had bested me? Go, play your games, but know that there is only one winner here, and it is me."

A wave of magical energy sweeps through the town, shaking it to the very core. Miraculously, the destroyed buildings and any remnants of the forest onslaught are gone and returned to their usual state. Perhaps Vaeros shouting was just another tantrum, an empty threat?

Not quite.

The town has been restored, but the locals? They are nowhere to be seen - cowering in their homes and fleeing to the sanctity of the Church of the Moon in hopes of staying out of sight of Vaeros and Dreamers both. The once tame video game effects are now far more intense - monsters from within those games are now rampaging through the town. They seem to shift through buildings, but if they run face first into a Dreamer, they will find them very corporeal and very deadly.

Not only that, but the lines are starting to blur between reality and fiction again, the healthbar above your head flickering in and out, the monsters turning from pixel beasts to real, live animals that roam Somnius - both feral and not. One second you are walking through town, and the next you are stepping onto a platform that starts to break under your weight, demanding you jump to the next platform before you plummet into an odd, multicolored abyss.

And strangest of all is that music coming from the labyrinth, growing louder when you approach and fading out when you move away.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

"That's not confusing and infuriating at all." Said the currently very confused and very infuriated woman. "Think they finally got sick of us in Seven? Jumbled up the timeline tossing us... wherever the fuck this is. I read something about a wish. Whatever the god damn hell that has to do with anything."

Have you seen that new shop? [A pause.] Oh, right. It's all new for you. There's an entertainment establishment that was set up not that long ago that has these... I would call them tavern games, but they're more complex than darts. See, there's a lot with rolling balls into targets, and the machine scores points for you automatically. And that's all fun, but there are also these other games that display images, and the goal is to press the right buttons and solve the right puzzles to win it.

All of those are what people call "arcade games".

So, imagine you're playing a tabletop war game. There are pieces to move, enemies to track, and you have to mark down how much damage you've done to armies or construction. Here, I have to track how my weapons are doing and manage my inventory. It's the same principle, but now you're playing the role of a warrior in real life instead of on graph paper.

[Taryon will read this Minecraft RPG setting as a chance to LARP. It's the only way he can understand it.]

[Taryon continues on with his self-praise. With so much free time and no friends, Taryon had plenty of time to cultivate his creative hobbies, even time-consuming ones like reading through the entire library and writing his own stories.]

I've been influenced by a lot of classic authors from my realm in my writing style. I'm sure some people will say it can go on too long in descriptions, but the more realistic the world is, but more interesting it becomes. I'm also making sure I don't focus too much on the everyday. Who wants to hear me tinkering at my workshop chapter after chapter?

[Surprisingly, he didn’t pull away the moment their fingers intertwined. In fact, Akutagawa mimics as well, threading their hands together and grasps the other one’s hand. Maybe there is a hint of a smile behind those soft red cheeks.

He begins leading the other down a road.]

Akutagawa: I woke up from what it seems a month slumber to more chaos.

Akutagawa: For example, if you break one of the jars over there, you are granted currency.

[He points to a pile of perfectly lined up jars randomly on the side of the road.]

>>Break a jar.
>>Ignore jars and keep walking.
>>Ask where they are going?
>>It’s a date! Go along!
>>Ask more about the strange phenomenons happening here.
>>Put it in.
>>Attack him!

It's actually made up of the bones of this being called a Titan, and the magic I can do is somehow part of him even though he's dead. It's pretty confusing, but I guess I'll have to learn more about it some other time.

[When Luz hopefully understood more about the Titan].

Same. Magic, at most, leaks into my world. It's still not something from my world making it possible. I'm actually pretty lucky that my Palisman could be pulled into this world.

[And that she was performing magic that was only supposed to be granted by the Titan. That was part of the weird mystery that was this place].

What's your world like, then? In mine, no one would look like you. They more like me. Just, uh, humans.

[She thought "regular" at first, then decided against it. She'd never really felt like a "regular" person, so no point using that qualifier].

[What in flames is she talking about? And what are these words for? Some kind of... Menu. He disregards it.]

Why would I ally with someone weak? There is no gain.

[Jeritza tries to protest in his head. That she may not be as weak as she seems--

Silence.]

[Whelk does indeed follow, unable to keep from staring at the strange scenery as they go. "Between reality and dreams," just sounds like Whelk's usual waking hours, but he doesn't say so, and those certainly aren't anything like this. When Maruki mentions a wish...

[Whelk's never been the type to make wishes, really, but after infiltrating Gansey's locker, he learned about a wish of a different sort. He lay down that night and thought about it - what he'd wish for if he knew that it would come true.

[Money. Power. Control - control of the line, which begets money, power...

[Rectification.

[Or, maybe, someone.

[Whispers crackle their way into Whelk's ears; they're hard to ignore, but Whelk has a good excuse, watching neighborhoods of treehouses and mushrooms pass by.]

I don't remember making one. [There's just a moment or two's pause, here.] One of my students at school has been talking with his friends about a myth that grants a wish. I was reading up on the legend. [Good teacher! See?]

Suppose I was thinking about it when I fell asleep...[He fell asleep? How?]

A "ruler" - what's the name? [Whelk breathed it to himself on the floor of an Algionby bathroom: Glendower.]

[Astarion has no context for what Taryon is describing. The idea of rolling balls to targets and even something scoring points for you he has no trouble with, but the rest... Even the "tabletop war game" flies over his head, so he chooses to just imagine it as a more intense and nerdy game of lanceboard.

But he chooses not to get frustrated by it. Sure he was angry and annoyed by his circumstance, but he'll just have to go along with the flow! So he grins, a bit wickedly and toothily, fangs becoming briefly prominent, and shrugs.]

I don't understand half of what you said, but as long as there's killing and a chance to gather goodies, I am more than game.

[He twirls his pixelated dagger in his hand with a practiced flourish.]

Why don't you lead on, saer. I'll cover the rear.

[Both makes sense given what's waiting for them back home, honestly.

Breathing out a heavier sigh of relief than normal, it takes a lot of effort on his part to not continue clinging to Hiyori as an extra safety precaution. He can't shake the thought of her stumbling or sliding down the roof to her doom due to his own abilities being lacking .

Worrying his bottom lip with his teeth, he fidgets in place, uncertainty the overwhelming emotion for him right now. They need to get out of here before the monsters figure out where they are and start trying to come after them. If that happens they really will be screwed. Tension running through him, he paces around the safe part of the roof, looking for an opening yet finding none. His brows continue furrowing in distress as his irritation mounts, leading him to vehemently shake his head at Hiyori's words.]

For how long, though? What if they sniff us out and follow us up here? What then? [Pacing along after her, he reaches out to keep a hand on her arm in case she should slip. Only, she has to go an jog his memory with the mention of a potion.] --! That's it! Hiyori, you're a genius! C'mere! Watch--!!

[Dragging her a bit back from the edge, he then sticks his tongue out and concentrates on his new animal form. Slowly, hs limbs twist into wings and sprout feathers until eventually a huge blue phoenix stands before her, looking much more majestic and holy than Yato ever does. Hopping up and down on his talons, he dips his head towards her happily, bumping her chest with affection.]

Ta-da~! Hop on, Hiyori! I'll get us out of here like this!

Finnick chuckles to himself. Nina's reaction to any disturbance is always anger, and it's kind of amusing to him.

"Maybe Seven, like... Fell apart and ceased to be. Or maybe it was never real, just a temporary simulation. I don't know."

Finnick tends to over-philosophize on this stuff and has to stop himself before he spirals into what-ifs.

"The wish, people say it doesn't really come true. Mine sort of came true, but not in the way I wanted. So I wouldn't worry about it- just another joke the overlords like to play on us."

He smiles.

It seems we're both observant, then. You're welcome.

[Kurogiri can be a little sarcastic... he is a villain, after all. He doesn't point out that he's also a human, since his power is still lagging, thanks to the games.]

Please move carefully, in case you're injured.

[He doesn't seem injured, but Kurogiri had heard that groan when he'd pushed himself up.]

Is there anything I can do to help?

[Finnick can't help but smile to himself at her response. She obviously hasn't had to fight much before, at least not with beasts, but she's trying to be brave and helpful. It's cute.

As she circles the wolf, Finnick does some fancy footwork and spearwork to keep its focus on him. It seems to work, and the wolf lunges toward him, leaving some space behind. Unfortunately, he didn't entirely see the lunge coming, and it's oddly timed with a movement he makes toward the wolf, so it sinks its teeth into Finnick's forearm (the real one).

He groans loudly and kicks the beast in the throat, trying to get it to release its jaws. It better not have rabies... Can video game wolves carry disease? Filed under questions he never thought he would have to ask himself.]

Which part? About the image displays? [Sure, Astarion would know about board games, right? Taryon wonders if he should have taken more time to describe platformers and fighting games.

But he has a party member! At least, that's what the text box and accompanying jingle that pops up says.]
Oh. It's official. We'll be fighting together from now on!

Yes, and the pressing buttons--er, not that I don't know what buttons are nor how they work, but pairing those two ideas together is a bit beyond me at the moment.

[He's envisioning scrying mirrors now as an "image display", but those aren't something you can manipulate, only watch.

He's startled by the text box, taking a step back as if it would bump into him otherwise. He squints at it.]

I've had something like this pop up before, too. Telling me things like how to jump. Absolutely bizarre. [He turns his attention back to Taryon, nodding.] Please, if it'll be useful for me to know for this little adventure.

A familiar voice rang the Hatter's ears, as he turned around to see the same little girl that came to his tea party not too long ago. He gave a smile, "Ah! Alice, there you are!" and on that he quickly turned to his pockets to pull out his watch, "Two days slow, very much still I'm afraid!"

Gives a sigh, "And to think, I have a contract to a place I don't know and I'm already late! I really ought to have the March Hare find a better butter to fix this with!" Looks back down to Alice, "Seems you wondered into this place as well dear child? Have you any contract as well?"

A sigh of relief came from Hatter as dusted himself off and adjusted his hat. Quite thankful he needn't worry about his head being detached from his body any time soon. Well, physically, so to speak. As the health bars appeared Hatter's eyes widen in both curiosity and fright as he gave a little yelp. Then attempted to try and poke at it as it gave a low hum and only fizzed with little block bits around his touch.

"I'm glad to know I can fight back, though I never learned how, nor do I own a weapon but..." Points at their health bars, "What are these anyway?"

Hatter observed her as the duckling snipped off the flowers. Oh, off with their heads, there they go. He slowly relaxed and a bit surprised the flowers themselves didn't scream. Beginning to test the ground with his foot, perhaps the flowers were in a deep sleep, or something is wrong with the soil.

"Did something possess the flowers to be dangerous? Do tell me," Hatter asked as he rubbed the back of his neck to ease his goosebumps. Heh, goose, duck. Perhaps duckbumps.

Ah—

[Kurogiri is familiar with the ways of videogames, having raised a gamer. He blinks at the sound of music. Noticing the health bars over their heads, he frowns at them faintly in disapproval, then glances at the staff resting on his shoulder. While it is a weapon, he isn't intending to start any fights with it. Especially not against a stranger, for no reason. Though he knows better than to underestimate people based on their ages.]

Certainly not. I apologize for the confusion. Things like this have been happening more frequently lately.

She had expected the response, since it was very much like when they had first met Toph in the swamp.

"Avatar Aang was my grandfather. I never had the opportunity to meet him. But Gran gran used to tell us all about the adventures all of you went on. Though we don't get to see her that ofter since she went home to the southern water tribe."

It had always been one of her favorite parts of their visits, hearing the stories of what had happened back during the hundred year war.

Jinora had wondered and hoped to get the story someday, along with what happened to Lord Zuko's mother, but Ikki and Milo always interrupted so she'd never gotten to hear it.

"You know this Vaeros and what he is capable of?"

That was enough to give Striga pause for a moment. It was true that she was confident in her ability, but going against an unknown force blindly when she had the ability to learn more would be foolish. And one did not win campaigns by doing foolish things. If he could shape the land as freely as the girl was implying it would be troublesome, and there was no telling how long it would take to reach him.

Even if dawn was not a problem for her in this world, she did still have limits and he could simply send these minor threats and gradually her strength would be consumed fighting them as well as the changing landscape. Her resources would be scarce.
